ANNUAL   REPORT

MGR Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology currently in its tenth year of operation takes pride in its academic and other added accomplishments thus far. Mrs. Meenakshi Ammal, Chair Person and Mr. A.N.Radhakrishnan, Managing Trustee, Sri Muthukumaran Educational Trust have been instrumental in the upbringing of this college. Here are a few of the activities and accomplishments of MGR IHMCT over the past academic year.

MGR Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology has had the honour of conducting short term summer training programmes and short term winter training programmes for the faculty of catering colleges in South India. These programmes sponsored by the Indian Society of Technical Education and All India Council for Technical Education included topics such as "Managing Quality in the Hotel Industry" and the like. The weeklong sessions had leading hoteliers from Chennai giving valuable input to the faculty that has enabled them to transfer appropriate knowledge and skills to the students of their respective colleges.

The entire college including staff and students attended the 3-day conference conducted by the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Association of India at Hotel Le Royal Meridian, Chennai. This conference included talks by eminent Hoteliers from different parts of the world. The students had the rare opportunity of taking care of internationally renowned members of the hospitality trade.

Students of MGR Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology were given the privilege of serving during the Annual Tamil Nadu collectors' conference. They also had the privilege of serving during Republic Day celebrations and Independence Day celebrations at Raj Bhavan.

All ministerial conferences and other official meetings hosted by Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has had students of MGR Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology actively paricipating in both the production and service options. Every year students of the college conduct two theme food festivals both national and international. These festivals act as a platform for budding aspirants to display their culinary skills and organizational skills in front of eminent hoteliers.

Mr.K.C.Tharyan, Executive Director, The Residency group of hotels, Mr.B.V.Sesha Reddy, Sr. Vice President, Savera Group of Hotels, Mr.M.O.Koshi, Vice President, Hotel GRT Grand Days, Chef Chandrasekar, Executive Chef, Hotel Taj Coromandel, Chef Giri, Executive Chef, Hotel Savera, Chef Kannan, Executive Chef, Taj Flight Catering unit (Chef Kannan is also the president of South India Culinary Association), Mr.Sudhakar Kamath, General manager, Hotel Beverly, Mr.Krishnakumar, General manager, Hotel Aadithya, Chef Babu, Executive Chef, Hotel Radha Park Inn, Mr.S.P.Mathur, IPS, Additional Director-Vigilance and Anti Corruption, Mrs.C.K.Gariyali, IAS, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Govt. are amongst a few eminent personalities that have visited the college in the recent past.

The students are required to submit a project report after the completion of 6 months Industrial Exposure Training during their sophomore year and 1 month Winter Vacation training during their first year. They are also required to submit a research project during their final year on various hotel related topics for which purpose they have to undertake active field work.

The students have been taken to various places in India over the past years on Educational Tours. These places include Goa, Mysore, Delhi, Kodaikanal, Coorg etc.

Industrial visits have been conducted for students ranging from breweries and distilleries to various hotels, the Taj flight catering unit and bakeries in Chennai.

Every year all leading hotels conduct in campus recruitment for students and for the past 8 years they have been 100% job placed in various parts of country and the world.

MGR IHMCT has been conducting invitation tournaments annually in the fields of Cricket, Volleyball, Table Tennis and Badminton for city hotels and catering colleges. Over 30 teams participate annually with excitement and enthusiasm.

MGR IHMCT has won trophies in volleyball, table tennis and badminton and has come runners-up in cricket in the annual MGR Invitation tournaments and other tournaments. Students have participated in various quiz competions conducted by other colleges and have won several prizes.

Annually, a student chef competition is conducted in MGR IHMCT that has students from over 25 colleges actively participating. Members of SICA have judged this event.

MGR IHMCT has had the honour of hosting the Nestle Star Chef of the Year competition meant for chefs of various hotels in Chennai. Netle India Ltd. sponsored thsi event. This event had as judges Chef Satish Arora, Director, Food Production, Taj Group of Hotels (Chef for Prime Minister of India) and Chef Gupta, Executive Chef, ITDC (Chef for President of India).

The undersigned has released a book entitled "Damu's Home Free Style Cookery", which has been well received amogst housewives and other catering college students. Also he has demonstrated various cuisines in Raj TV and subsequently in Jaya TV as a service to the public. These shows have a brought a lot of name and fame to the college and has helped increase admissions.

Last year forty-five of the final year students passed out with a first class distinction and one student Ms.Smitha Mukundan had obtained a first class pass with honors.

In conclusion, I would like to thank everyone who has helped and guided this institution and has given it its present stature. I hope that with their continued support the college will scale greater heights.
